It’s 2017…and we’re back!

Hello there! Did you miss us??

We’re finally back after a looooong hiatus from the blog. It has been a bit of a crazy year (plus some) as I’m sure you have guessed. As much as I loved updating the blog, the stress of running the bakery and raising a toddler had me at a breaking point where I had to cut everything non-essential. The pressure of trying to stay on top of updates was just too much and I needed to take a cold-turkey break so I could attempt to decrease the feeling that I was “not enough” in pretty much every aspect of life during that time. Luckily though things have since mellowed out significantly. Katrine and I decided in November to close Slikkepotten (more on that later) so despite all the hard work it has taken to actually shut down (and still not done), the crushing weight of it all is gone and I feel like I can finally take some time and mental energy to be creative again!

I thought the best way to begin again was to start with a new year and a new life!

2017 began with us preparing to welcome our new little baby boy into the world! The thought of two kids was overwhelming to say the least (at least for me. Chris was ready to have another boy in the family!), but we were excited to start this next chapter of our lives!

The photos were taken in the sheep field just behind our house by the amazing Desiree from Desiree Photography, who pretty much documents all our major family milestones these days!

Menorca Photo Challenge by Chris

In May, Chris went to Menorca, Spain for 2 1/2 weeks for a work exercise. Seriously… he gets to go to all the cool places :)

He’ll laugh at me for writing that, because in reality yes, he gets to go to some pretty awesome places, but he also works 10-12 hours a day while he’s there and often only gets to sightsee at night, if at all. Fortunately, he had a few days in Menorca where he got a chance to explore in daylight and even got to go to the beach after work once!

Before he left, I slipped a little Menorca Photo Challenge into his suitcase, just for a bit of fun :)

So here’s Spain according to Chris’ Menorca Photo Challenge:

1) Your hotel room

2) Top 3 things you ate

Yes, there are only 2. He forgot to take pictures while he was eating too many times :)

3) A church

4) A self-portrait at work

5) Clouds

6) Something touristy

7) Something you do every day

8) The beach

9) The ocean

10) A boat

11) Something very Spanish

12) A plant

13) Architecture

14) Something colorful

15) Night

Baby sheep!
One Saturday in April I was finishing up a wedding cake delivery near Utstein Kloster (the ancient monastery on one of the islands north of Stavanger), when what should appear but….
LITTLE BABY LAMBS!!

I may have gotten a little overly excited and pulled off to the side of the road to grab the camera (which was luckily in the back seat of the car) to document the cuteness overload!
The area around Utstein Kloster is one of my favorite drives. I love it when I have a wedding cake delivery up there and have the excuse to make the trip. Even though it wasn’t quite spring yet, it was as idyllic as ever. Throw the sheep into the mix and I just couldn’t stop taking pictures! It was definitely one of those “I love living in Norway!” sort of days!

Anniversary Photo Walk

To celebrate our anniversary this year, we decided we would FINALLY give ourselves a new camera. Both of our ancient point-n-shoots were in various stages of crippling electronic senility, and we had been resorting to documenting significant portions of our life with our smart dumbphone cameras and my iPad. (And yes, I fit riiiight in with the Asain tourist sterotype.) Oh, and on really special occasions, hauling around the decade-old clunky work camera that felt like a 5 pound stone hanging around your neck.

After hours of research, Chris finally settled on the Canon 6D. We decided this back in January and put away a little each month to be able to buy it in August in time for our anniversary. We made it just in time, but unfortunately the package wouldn't ship to our APO address so we had to wait for my parents to bring it. Total bummer!

Chris surprised me on our anniversary day, however, by borrowing the Canon 7D from work for the evening so we could still play around with it and learn the ropes. We took it out on a photowalk and switched off documenting bits of the islands surrounding Stavanger while Chris taught me how to use all the new fancy settings.

It was really interesting to see what each of us was drawn to photograph. We could be looking at the exact same thing and one person would find it inspiring and create a beautiful image out of it while the other would have just passed it by. It was a fun way to get to know eachother!

As we were walking, Chris gave me the challenge to photograph something ugly and make it beautiful.
This was my winning photo:

When we got home, we celebrated with homemade Cafe Rio burritos COMPLETE with homemade tortillas :) I'm getting closer and closer to perfecting the copycat recipe!

Here's to many more years of awesome!
