A Word from the Bird: Intruder
Hello. It’s me Skittles the bird.

Chelsea and Chris get asked all the time, “How is Skittles handling the new addition to the family?” I’ll answer this for you:

I dislike that stinky wiggly thing.

Chelsea tried to get me used to the idea of having a baby around before she was born by buying me a doll to hang out with, but I tell you… a doll is nothing like an actual living breathing tiny human. For one thing, a doll doesn’t make sounds. A baby makes A LOT of sounds and I don’t like any of them. I’m pretty chillaxed if the baby is silent, but if it is making sounds it is obviously untrustworthy.

It also gets ALL the attention. I used to be the baby of the family, but now I only get to come out to play during nap time or after bed. Chelsea says it’s because I get too defensive and territorial when the baby makes noises and I need to learn to control my temper, but whatever. I know when I’ve been unfairly demoted.

Why couldn’t it come out as an automatic 10 year old? Yes… 10 years olds are nice. I like 10 year olds. Babies grow fast, right?

Love,

Skittles

Misc September
September was almost as busy as August when it came to cakes and working at the bakery. Wedding season was still in full swing, although thankfully it was the tail end of it and things were starting to wind down. However, at Slikkepotten, when cake orders wind down classes start winding up! We had some great courses in September, including a few with guest teacher Sweet Sugarboy Ed, the winner of the first season of “Cake Wars” here in Norway.
New shipment of supplies and cake pans all ready to be filled with batter.
Our “special” station wagon needs a lot of tender loving care, which fortunately Chris is able to provide. Here he is disconnecting the power window in the back seat so that the window doesn’t constantly fall down and let in the rain anymore. I sure love my handyman :)
Skittles chillin’ in the shower.
To start preparing Skittles for the new little one in our life we took a leaf out of all the parenting books and bought her a baby doll to start getting her used to her new little “sibling”. (Just to clarify, I usually find it silly when people refer to their kids and pets as siblings, but in the case of Skittles it really is exactly like preparing a 2 year old for the baby so it’s hard to find another word for it. We’re slowly turning into “those” people…)
Unfortunately, the first meeting didn’t go well. See those spread tail feathers? That’s her attack position. She’s not really a fan of kids so we have our work cut out for us…
Sweet Sugarboy Ed teaching us how to make his stunning sugar roses and peonies!

A Word from the Bird: Thanksgiving

“Hi guys! It’s me, Skittles!

Sorry you haven’t heard from me in a while. I’ve been pretty busy these days. I’ve been chewing apart all the new toys Chelsea bought me over the summer,  practicing my flying skills, climbing up and down my new spiral swing, eating at least half an orange per day (quite a lot for a bird my size!), pooping out said orange, and the other day Chelsea gave me a WHOLE ROLL of toilet paper to shred because she’s been busy with all this bakery nonsense.  My days are quite full.

Anyway, I just wanted to wish you all a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING from all of us! A happy one for you at least. I don’t like Thanksgiving. For one thing, I’m not allowed near the kitchen because I might fly into the hot oven or slip into the gravy or something and secondly…there is another bird in the house that is getting more attention than me. It’s so unfair.

At least at the end of the day I don’t get eaten.

So I have a lot to be thankful for :)”

A Word from the Bird: Boxes

Hi guys! Skittles here again.

I just wanted to make sure you all started off this new year with a post from your favorite parrot. (That’s me.)

I had a great Christmas. Christmas is the best time of the whole year. It’s full of two of my very favorite things: Paper and cardboard boxes. And sometimes….paper IN cardboard boxes!

After Christmas, Chelsea thought I looked bored without all the Christmas boxes around so she gave me a cereal box to play in. (Lucky Charms if you must know.)

I liked the cereal box so much I laid an egg in it. I got so excited it came right out of my bum.

I laid 2 more a few days later and am sitting on them until further notice. And yes…I know they won’t hatch, but instincts are instincts after all. What’s a bird to do?

Chelsea and Chris have been REALLY busy lately and barely have time to play with me, let alone blog…so I’m taking over this week to catch all you guys up!

Early last week, Chris left for Naples, Italy to do what he does for the NATO folks there. Then Chelsea flew out on Monday to join him and bounce around Naples for a few days.  What about me you ask? I got left behind. Again. I never get to go on the fun trips… :(  Chelsea says she plans to catch up on the blog a bunch while she’s gone, but we’ve all heard that before so we’ll see if it actually happens. ::eyeroll::

In the meantime… I’ll fill you in on all the juicy details of life around the Hill house lately.

Chris has been really busy at work. Tons of NATO stuff. I don’t really know what goes on (I’m just the bird. Nobody fills me in on details like that) I just know he gets home now after the time it gets dark.  A little while ago, a ton of boxes showed up in the mail and Chris used all the stuff that was in the boxes to build a new computer. It was awesome! So awesome that all I wanted to do was hang out with him and help him build it. Except I wasn’t allowed. Probably because I like to chew on wires. Once, I bit through one of Chris’ USB cables and he didn’t like that at all. Yeah…that’s definitely why I was banned from helping with the computer…

Chelsea has been super busy making lots of cakes. It’s great because she’s home all the time with me…but not so great because I’m not allowed in the kitchen when she’s making them. I’ve learned to look extra sad about it though because when I do, she brings me small bits of cake. I like cake. Lately I’ve been getting a lot of shoulder time though because she’s been doing a lot of cake stuff on the computer. Something about applying to turn it into an official business and get health permits and a license and stuff. I dunno. I just know she’s happy now that she can say she has a “real” job.  She also played the piano for the Primary Program in church a few Sundays ago. She practiced a ton leading up to it, and I rediscovered how much I love hanging out with people who practice the piano. It’s been a while. I like to sit on Chelsea’s knee underneath the keyboard while she practices and sing along.

Hmm…what else…Back in August, we celebrated Chris being in my life for a whole year!! (That was when he married Chelsea) That was special. Until they left me behind while they went to celebrate by themselves in Scotland. Chelsea will have to fill you in on all the details on that one though because surprise surprise, I didn’t get to go again. Stupid international import laws.

In September, they went on a backpacking trip with our friends Josh and Kolie. Chelsea also turned the big 2-4. She and Chris went out for pizza (her favorite food) and Italian desserts and then saw Cowboys & Aliens. They don’t get to out for dinner and a movie much here because everything is so expensive, so I know Chelsea had an awesome birthday. I got to nibble on some bits of the leftover pizza they brought home (coincidentally also my favorite food.)

In October, they got all fancied up and went to the JWC Ball and later completely skipped Halloween. It was weird trying to celebrate a holiday when no one else around you was celebrating. Next year we’ll do it for sure!

In other news, I got a new toy. It’s called Shower Perch and I loooove it. The shower is the new best place in the whole apartment. The other day I wouldn’t come out for an entire hour after Chelsea turned the water off. It’s amazing!
