Ferris Wheel

You know what I love about Chris? Lots of things.

But one of them is the fact that he will ride Ferris wheels with me in the pouring rain when one spontaneously shows up in Stavanger Harbor the day before he has to leave on a business trip to Poland.

He's a keeper :)

Oh Christmas Tree
Awww! Our first Christmas tree as a married couple!

I know. It’s precious.

We discovered that not having a car makes it a little difficult to get a Christmas tree. It was quite the puzzle. Also, Norwegians decorate their trees much later than they do in America. (Tradition says on the 23rd, although some are starting to do it a bit earlier) Luckily, a tree lot FINALLY opened up within walking distance of our abode this week!  So, with only a week left before Christmas, we marched ourselves down to the harbor and bought our first Christmas tree off of a boat that brings trees from the north every year.
Now it’s officially officially Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Gladmat and the Tall Ship Races

After I got back from my three-week trip home to the US, Chris and I had one full day together before I started a temporary 2-week job working at an ice cream booth during Gladmat (translated: “Happy Food” aka Stavanger’s yearly food festival) and the Tall Ship Races. Gladmat was fun…lots of new food and restaurants and such, but the Tall Ship Races were where it was at!

The Tall Ship Races are a big European sailboat race, this year from Ireland to Sweden. The race is done in 3 legs with 3 or 4 day stopovers after each one. One of the stopovers was in Stavanger this year (the last time they stopped here was in 2004).

In the weeks leading up to the race, all we heard was “Oh, it’s a big sailboat race.”

Cool, we thought. We’ll see a bunch of these in the harbor this week:

No.
We got these:

Holy epic week! The whole harbor was packed with huge old and new sailing ships 3 deep. It was AMAZING! For the entire week I sat in my booth making smoothies and watching the ships come into the harbor dreaming of becoming a sailor (read: pirate) and seriously contemplating sailing off to sea at the prow of one of these ships.

It’s really too bad this doesn’t happen every year!
