Misc September
September was almost as busy as August when it came to cakes and working at the bakery. Wedding season was still in full swing, although thankfully it was the tail end of it and things were starting to wind down. However, at Slikkepotten, when cake orders wind down classes start winding up! We had some great courses in September, including a few with guest teacher Sweet Sugarboy Ed, the winner of the first season of “Cake Wars” here in Norway.
New shipment of supplies and cake pans all ready to be filled with batter.
Our “special” station wagon needs a lot of tender loving care, which fortunately Chris is able to provide. Here he is disconnecting the power window in the back seat so that the window doesn’t constantly fall down and let in the rain anymore. I sure love my handyman :)

To start preparing Skittles for the new little one in our life we took a leaf out of all the parenting books and bought her a baby doll to start getting her used to her new little “sibling”. (Just to clarify, I usually find it silly when people refer to their kids and pets as siblings, but in the case of Skittles it really is exactly like preparing a 2 year old for the baby so it’s hard to find another word for it. We’re slowly turning into “those” people…)
Unfortunately, the first meeting didn’t go well. See those spread tail feathers? That’s her attack position. She’s not really a fan of kids so we have our work cut out for us…

The Past Few Weeks

You guys… I know my last post was all about the lack of spring… but this weekend spring has sprung! A lot can change in a few weeks! It’s currently 75 degrees F (count-em: 7-5 degrees!). I’m typing this sitting outside on our balcony in a skirt and bare feet feeling the breeze in my hair and listening to the screams of the kids swimming in the pond across the way and the waves from the passing fjord boats. Chris is just inside the door reading in a sunny spot on the couch. It’s absolutely glorious. I swear I can actually FEEL myself soaking the vitamin D into my winter-pale skin!

Now…not to be gloomy on such a beautiful day or anything, but while it appears spring has finally shown it’s face, we’ve been living here long enough to know better now. Based on the past few years, around this time we typically get a major heat wave (meaning hanging out between 70-75 degrees) for a little while and then it dips back into wet and chilly for most of the rest of the “summer”. Even the locals accept that this may very well be the only true summer days we will get. So while it’s a little bittersweet, we are taking advantage of it!

Here are a few Instagram shots from our phones from the past little while to keep you up to speed. We’ve had a busy few weeks! Cousin Patrick and his new wife Anna came to visit, Chris has been working on setting up one of his old computers as a home server, Skittles is adorable as always, cakes and cupcakes continue to rule my life, we celebrated Norway’s Constitution Day,  we’ve been practicing our sailing skills we learned last summer, we watched our first Eurovision Song Contest, we planted a balcony garden, and the weather is finally allowing us to grill for real!

It has been a good few weeks :)

A Word from the Bird: Thanksgiving

“Hi guys! It’s me, Skittles!

Sorry you haven’t heard from me in a while. I’ve been pretty busy these days. I’ve been chewing apart all the new toys Chelsea bought me over the summer,  practicing my flying skills, climbing up and down my new spiral swing, eating at least half an orange per day (quite a lot for a bird my size!), pooping out said orange, and the other day Chelsea gave me a WHOLE ROLL of toilet paper to shred because she’s been busy with all this bakery nonsense.  My days are quite full.

Anyway, I just wanted to wish you all a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING from all of us! A happy one for you at least. I don’t like Thanksgiving. For one thing, I’m not allowed near the kitchen because I might fly into the hot oven or slip into the gravy or something and secondly…there is another bird in the house that is getting more attention than me. It’s so unfair.

At least at the end of the day I don’t get eaten.

So I have a lot to be thankful for :)”

A Word from the Bird: Boxes

Hi guys! Skittles here again.

I just wanted to make sure you all started off this new year with a post from your favorite parrot. (That’s me.)

I had a great Christmas. Christmas is the best time of the whole year. It’s full of two of my very favorite things: Paper and cardboard boxes. And sometimes….paper IN cardboard boxes!

After Christmas, Chelsea thought I looked bored without all the Christmas boxes around so she gave me a cereal box to play in. (Lucky Charms if you must know.)

I liked the cereal box so much I laid an egg in it. I got so excited it came right out of my bum.

I laid 2 more a few days later and am sitting on them until further notice. And yes…I know they won’t hatch, but instincts are instincts after all. What’s a bird to do?

Meet Skittles

“Hi!

I’m Skittles. Since I’m the latest addition to the Hill household I decided I needed to have a voice on this blog.

Allow me to introduce myself.

I’m a parrot. Specifically a Sun Conure.

Chelsea got me when she was 12 and I was 4 weeks old. She’s now (almost) 24 and I’m 12. I’ll probably live to be 30.

I like treats, orange juice, apples and bread. Lots of bread. Bread bread bread. But not vegetables. Ew gross.

I’m loud and I love to dance, climb all over stuff, and shred paper.

I recently had the biggest adventure of my entire life! I was living at home with Chelsea’s mom and dad in Las Vegas when Chelsea came home (yay!!) and packed me up in a brand new kennel. It was pretty swanky with windows on all sides and a perch and everything! I got to go to the airport where I saw all sorts of new things and new people. I love new people.

Then I got put on a plane. I didn’t like that much. It was chilly and dark and my ears popped a lot. It made me cry just a little. But then I fell asleep and before I knew it, I was in Norway!

After getting off the plane I got poked and prodded by the customs vet. I didn’t like that either and bit her a little. She deserved it.

THEN we got on a train! (Told you this was a big adventure!) I liked the train ride much better than the plane. I got to sit with my cover off and watch everything pass by the windows and people kept coming up to play with me.

We finally arrived at my new home in Stavanger. I experienced this weird thing called jet lag and fell asleep at weird times for the next week. There were also lots of strange, new noises and smells and it doesn’t get dark when it’s supposed to. It stressed me out and I plucked out all the feathers on my neck. I do that when I’m nervous.

But then my big cage arrived in the mail FINALLY so now that I’m finally adjusted and in my normal cage I think I’m starting to like it here in Norway. Plus, Chelsea gives me lots of extra treats. I think she’s feels a bit guilty about putting me through such a crazy adventure!

I had to make sure Chris was putting my cage together correctly.

Overall, I’m highly entertaining and Chelsea and Chris love me. Well…Chelsea loves me. Chris tolerates me. But I love Chris anyway  (He’s actually my very favorite in the whole entire family…but shhh, don’t tell Chelsea)”
