Adventures in Brianhead

After our lovely Christmas with the Hill side of the family, we + Ryan headed down to Brianhead, Utah to meet up with the Osborn side of the family for a little skiing/snowboarding action before we all went back down to Vegas. Unfortunately, Ol’ Mama Nature decided to stick it to all the people wishing for a white Christmas and dump snow on us the day AFTER, which happened to be when we were hoping to leave. Ok, fine… we’d wait ’til morning, but not a half a day longer! We couldn’t miss this perfect snow and my family, all cooped up and waiting on us, was getting a bad case of cabin fever.

So the next morning, we headed out into the snow in Ryan’s deteriorating Neon.

“We have chains!” we said.

“We are young with iron wills, we’ll make it up the mountain!” we said.

Four slippery attempts up the mountain and 7 hours later, we found ourselves sipping hot chocolate and slurping soup and saltines at the Parowan town diner, resigning ourselves to the fact that we would not be making it up the mountain that night. And judging by the number of other stranded would-be skiers around us also slurping hot chocolate and soup, we knew we had to find a motel room fast if we didn’t want to sleep in the car.

Luckily we got the LAST motel room in town, complete with the ever-classy queen-mattresses-on-twin-frames combo, which made for a rather wobbly night. But we were just grateful to have a room! With both laptops running, we managed to introduce Ryan to both Doctor Who and Sherlock (at the same time no less. We would play one while the other buffered, and then when it quit, we would switch and watch the other one while the previous one loaded, etc. The poor little motel internet didn’t know what hit it.)

The next morning, the ice melted and we made it up the mountain all piece-of-cake-like. We met up with my family just in time to hit the slopes with my dad. Blue skies, light wind, no crowds. Booyah. Totally worth all the effort the previous night!

We documented it all with our GoPros, and it naturally turned into a pretty awesome video, if I do say so myself :)

Enjoy!

Life Lately – November Edition

I read a great analogy a while ago:

Instagram is to a photographer as a sketchpad is to a painter.

I knew there was a reason I loved Instagram! Instagram basically takes away all of the artistic decisions a photographer must make and the only real choice left to you is composition. It’s great practice and I love it!

So without further ado, here are some of the latest snapshots of our life:

1 – 2: TCSE (The Coolest Sheehans Ever) hosted a Murder Mystery dinner party a little while ago. This one was set in Ancient Rome. Chris was Bogus Fortunatus: Entrail-reading seer-turned-pop sensation and I was Cleptopatra: Thieving queen of the Nile.

3. Bruleeing the heck out of the creme brulee!

4. Taco pizzas

5-6: Early Christmas present from our fellow Walking Dead-lovers Josh and Kolie!

7. Donated cupcakes for Prosjekt Pupp (translated: “Project Boob”) – a local breast cancer awareness fundraiser

8. Norwegian-style hot dogs (wrapped in bacon complete with sour cream/mayo sauce and fried onions!)

9-12: It snowed BIG time this past week. You’d be surprised, considering this is Norway an’ all, but it doesn’t really snow a ton in Stavanger. I’m pretty sure we got more snow this past weekend than we did all of last winter. And it has been FREEZING! Our floor heating in our house hasn’t been able to keep up with the cold and it’s been rather nippy. I had to put an electric hot pad on top of Skittle’s cage to keep the poor little thing from getting icy feet. She won’t stay on my shoulder more than 10 minutes before asking to go back to her cage to snuggle up on her hot pad. On the worst day, we both took a nap in the bathroom because for some reason it stays toasty warm in there. Also, this morning we were out of milk and I didn’t have the courage to bundle up to go outside, so I ate my cereal with half & half. It’s been a little pathetic :) I miss Chris and his warmness to hug and snuggle up to at night, even though he may or may not have forgotten to put our winter tires on before he left for Germany (thank goodness for home teachers!)

But gosh, Stavanger sure is beautiful in the snow!

Sledding

Last week when Stavanger FINALLY got its first major snow of the season. It was rather exciting. So we grabbed Jenn (and her sleds) and went sledding!

Sledding is just so happy :)

You might have noticed the camera blatantly strapped to my forehead in most of the pictures. That’s the GoPro Hero Chris gave me for Christmas. It’s basically a camera that you can strap or stick on stuff to get awesome action shots. It’s the same camera we used to make the surfing video and I had grand plans to make a sledding video just like it, but the footage was all bumpy and jumbled (as if we were sliding down a big hill or something…) so I opted to just give you one little sample so you could sled with us :)

Happy Winter!

Spring has sprung in Stavanger!
