“Pretend Spring” Is Not Actually Spring.

Chris and I are so ridiculously ready for spring. Enough with these dark Norwegian winter days! “Enough!” I say!  Spring seems to be coming to the rest of the world and it’s high time it appeared here too. All the signs of spring are here… but no actual spring. We’ve tried to ignore that fact, follow the signs, and pretend it’s spring anyway.

For example, we’ve had two straight weeks with no rain AND lots of sunshine, but when we pulled our bikes out of storage to enjoy a sunny ride around Hundvåg island over Easter break we couldn’t ride long because the still-freezing temperatures froze our faces and fingers.

Tulips and Easter lilies are popping up in shops and seedlings for our future patio garden are sprouting and thriving on the windowsill, but not a single bud or blossom is to be found on the trees and bushes outside.

Asparagus is actually starting to taste good again, but although we power-washed our balcony, scrubbed down our Weber, and grilled up the first brats of the season to go with it, we were forced back inside by the bitter fjord wind when the sun dipped behind a building.

Swimsuit-clad mannequins show off in all the store windows, but when we brought camp chairs to the beach to spend the morning reading in the sunshine and sand, we realized how much of a bummer it was that we didn’t bring thick blankets too.

We even helped the JWC Sailing Club dust off the boats to be ready to launch for a summer of sailing, but on a trial run today it snowed.

So take note, no matter how desperate you are and no matter how hard you try… pretending it is Spring will not make it Spring.

Lake Skating

The other day I came across the bucket list I started back in high school and have updated every few years since (bucket list = A list of all the things you want to do before you “kick the bucket.”) I hadn’t looked at it in at least a year or so, and guess what! I crossed off nine things! NINE things! Life is good :)

One of the things I was most excited to cross off was ice skating on a frozen lake. All through my “career” as a figure skater, I dreamed about getting to skate on a frozen lake. It always seemed so magical in the movies! But since I learned to skate in the deserts of Las Vegas, chances to check that off the list were… well.. non-existant.

Luckily we moved to Norway where we got hit with a frigid cold spell that froze all the freshwater lakes and ponds! So we took a break from our crazy work week and had fun with the ice on Mosvanet.

Skating on a frozen lake… CHECK!

It really was just as magical as I had dreamed!

A few other things that got crossed off the list: Go on a cruise, bake a pumpkin pie from a real pumpkin, visit Italy, go backpacking, and donate my hair to Locks of Love!

Sledding

Last week when Stavanger FINALLY got its first major snow of the season. It was rather exciting. So we grabbed Jenn (and her sleds) and went sledding!

You might have noticed the camera blatantly strapped to my forehead in most of the pictures. That’s the GoPro Hero Chris gave me for Christmas. It’s basically a camera that you can strap or stick on stuff to get awesome action shots. It’s the same camera we used to make the surfing video and I had grand plans to make a sledding video just like it, but the footage was all bumpy and jumbled (as if we were sliding down a big hill or something…) so I opted to just give you one little sample so you could sled with us :)

Happy Winter!
